American Apparel
In general, the American Apparel brand is known for two things - its extremely fashionable, desirable, youth-oriented clothing and accessories that retail at a relatively high price point, and its occasionally controversial advertising campaigns that sometimes show significant amounts of uncovered skin (both male and female).
Now the UK has its own version of American Apparel garments designed especially for the customisable and imprintables industry. This range is from the same company, the same factories, the same designers and the same workers as the retail products. The difference is that this new collection is specifically intended to be customised with product names, corporate branding, charity logos, political slogans, university emblems or any other artwork that the customer wishes to put on it - even another retail brand.

T-Shirts and Tops.
There are 11 t-shirts by American Apparel including short-sleeve, long-sleeve, v-neck, crew-neck and sleeveless. There are 5 other styles of American Apparel tops such as pullovers, cardigans and track jackets. The variety of fabrics used across these ranges includes pure cotton, tri-blend, fine jersey and poly-cotton in an impressive array of colours.
The t-shirt pictured above is the AA003 Ladies Fine Jersey T-Shirt in ultra-soft combed cotton with 30 singles construction that produces the fine jersey finish - a very smooth feel that is ideal for screen printing onto.
Hoodies.
A collection of half a dozen American Apparel Hoodies in very fashionable styles, fabrics and colours. From lightweight hooded t-shirts to much heavier full-zip hoodies, the range also includes 2-colour designs and contrast colour trims. There are even a couple for the kids that can be found under the American Apparel Childrenswear selection.
Sportswear.
Targetted more towards the yoga, pilates and dance end of the sporting spectrum, American Apparel Sportswear continues the theme of a modern and simplistic look and feel that reflects the wider American Apparel collection. Products in this range include sports leggings, yoga pants, leotards, sports bras and classically styled running shorts.
Accessories.
Underwear, socks, legwarmers and bags make up the American Apparel Accessories range. The Gym Bag is a simple holdall in bold solid colours with contrast silver grey straps, whilst the Hot Shorts really live up to their name and would make an excellent branded product.
American Apparel Ethical Profile.
Vertical integration may not sound as snappy as fair trade but, in true American Apparel style, it is a modern and straightforward way of ensuring that workers are paid fairly and treated fairly. In simple terms, it means that the entire manufacturing process is monitored, managed and controlled from the top down. Or the bottom up. Either way, American Apparel can be certain that no dubious sub-contracting can take place as they do all of the production themselves.
Further, by concentrating their activities within a few square miles of Los Angeles the carbon footprint of their activities is a lot lower than that of their competitors. Other innovative programs initiated by American Apparel include solar panels on the factory roof, a free bicycle service for employees, catalogues and brochures on recycled paper, using Cleaner Cotton and Organic Cotton, supporting local minority groups and donating thousands of garments to disaster relief.
American Apparel manages to be a global brand and a local business supporting its own community at the same time.
